MOLLE organization systems are a great added feature for a BOB. MOLLE webbing is straps built into the outside of your pack that allows for additional gear and even other packs to be attached externally. If you have a sturdy pack with MOLLE webbing and carabiners, you can add a lot more gear on the outside of the pack that you otherwise might not have been able to pack inside your BOB. Look for a pack that has multiple compartments, with pockets and organizers built in to help keep track of the small items, and try to pack your BOB strategically with items grouped that you’ll use together.
If it’s not possible, they need to go out of their way to make an obvious trail to where they’re going. A great list, I’d add cordage of different types and strengths – paracord stretches and doesn’t work well after being stressed. In a true emergency, you might not have the time to throw those last few items into your bug out bag that you’ll really need. So, the short answer to this question is that the bag should be packed and ready to go at all times. But you should also be careful to regularly check any items in your bag that could expire or need replacement if they’ve been sitting for a while. An EDC or small pack is not going to have space or organization options that you need to carry the gear that will save your life.
It’s hard to get much more useful for the same amount of weight. You mention keeping stuff dry with cover for the BOB. I highly recommend dry bags as well or even instead.
Tinder needs to be dry and soft if it is going to catch a spark quickly and reliably, and if you don’t want to be struggling to work with unsuitable “found” tinder you need to bring your own. Dryer lint is one of my favorites since it is free, easy to pack and easy to work with. Tinder is one of those resources that most preppers just assume will be lying around in one form or another, ripe and waiting for use when it is time to get fire started most quickly. But no matter how diligent someone is, no matter how thorough they are when it comes to doing their “preflight” and reviewing those checklists mistakes will get made.
Don’t buy any other brand unless you compare it to this one. I have two of these and have taken them in my bag to several countries. I’ve used pouches like these TONS of times on convoys. They come in a lot of MREs (not as good as the version I linked to though, I’m sure). Solar panel, battery charger, and USB battery to charge your cell phone, AA batteries and small electronics. This stuff can be used to make traps, fashioned into a garrote, or for anti-personnel traps or triggers.
Remember that a Bug Out Bag is recommended to store 3 days worth of rations, water, and gear in a survival situation. Remember, it doesn’t help to have 10 lighters as backup if your environment and skill level won’t let you start a fire with a lighter. Also, remember that you should be carrying quite a bit of water in addition to your gear, so don’t pack too much gear. Packing a bug out bag can seem overwhelming as the task of not forgetting something important can be daunting. There are many checklists out there that will tell you the essential items you should always keep in your bug out bag.
The contents of this pack can be split into three categories – sustenance, first aid, and survival equipment. And now for a biggie (an update I’ve added after TONS of hours of research). The BEST way to stay warm and dry is to carryan ultralight 2-person backpacking tent. The technology on these things have improved dramatically in the past 10 years, and you can get an actual tent for about the same weight than a hammock/tarp or just a bivy. Choose a sturdy bag that is easy to carry either as a backpack or slung over your shoulder.
